I recently repurchased some Phyto haircare for the whole family and realised I've never written about this brand on my blog. It may be because spelling the full name of the brand (Phytotherathrie) is such an enormous pain, but it is a brand I like very much.
I have used Phyto products for more than 10 years - I first began using them during Blonde Period I (before Miss London) when my hair was fried from highlighting. At the time the shampoos came in glass bottles which looked lovely but were a biohazard in the shower; it's a miracle I still have ten toes. On the plus side, they stopped my hair from looking and feeling like straw.
The shampoos are now packaged in more sensible aluminium bottles, and are £11.50 to £12.50. The everyday rinse-off conditioners (Phytobaume) are £13.50 to 14.50, so it's much less expensive as a brand than the Rahua I also use and love.
Phytoapaisant is a soothing shampoo for easily-irritated scalps. Mr and Miss London both have hard-to-wash, thick, almost waterproof hair and scalps that tend to get itchy and flaky easily, and it is hard to find a shampoo that is aimed at irritated scalps, rather than dandruff (this one is; there are other shampoos in the range for treating dandruff.) This shampoo manages to clean their hair and stop itchy-flaky head, and it smells pleasant; very neutral and not medicinal.
Phytojoba is the shampoo I use on myself; it is designed for normal to dry hair and gives great shine. I used Phytocitrus when my hair was coloured.
Ingredients of Phytojoba:
Phytobaume conditioner has sometimes annoyed me over the years. It was originally quite a runny liquid but a very good detangler, but then the formula was changed to make it more of a traditional conditioner-cream texture and they added silicones - after using over a period of a couple of months it made the ends of my hair quite brittle (and I had exited Blonde Period I and had a radical haircut, so it wasn't the hair to blame). The formula has changed again to remove silicones (it's still a cream texture) and I once again like it. There are now three different versions; one for normal to dry hair (I use this one), one for very damaged/weakened hair and one for colour-treated hair.
Ingredients of Phytobaume Hydration:
I also like the Phyto 7 and Phyto 9 leave-in hydrating creams - essentially these are smoothing creams for longer hair that discourage frizz and condition the ends of the hair. Phyto 7 works for my hair now; Phyto 9 is best for very thick or dry hair.
I will review the Secret de Nuit overnight treatment later on in its own post before this becomes War & Peace. It is the most expensive item in the Phyto range at £28, but it's a pretty good substitute for the much more expensive Ageless Overnight Hair Repair treatment by Fekkai.
Phyto shampoos and conditioners are paraben and silicone free. I purchase them from John Lewis, there are also a number of online retailers, including Beauty Expert and Feel Unique.

I liked Phyto shampoo but the danger of them being in glass bottles and stored in the shower stopped me from repurchasing. Thank goodness they have been repackaged.
ReplyDeleteThe bottles were pretty but *so* dangerous for me. I much prefer the new packaging.
Delete*claps hands* It is as if you are a physic marvel! Your post is so well timed. I'm off to have a browse now, I have a feeling I will be purchasing for the family as well as myself, Mr MB and J both have thick hair and irritated scalp issues and the two littlies both suffer with very bad cradle cap/SD and fine hair.
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
Phytoapaisant for Mr MB and J. I more or less command you. I never tried the baby range on C (it wasn't about when she was a baby), but worth a look.
DeleteThis takes me back, I too used to use Phyto when I was a waist length blonde highlighted siren (ha!) circa 1992, and it was the best. Thanks Grace I need reminding how good this was.
ReplyDeleteStill a siren Jan! :)
DeleteVery well timed post indeed. I have now placed an order with Feelunique. I went for the dry hair range in the end. I usually find that 'coloured' ranges are not moisturising enough for me.
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed the Rahua but don't like to use the same product consecutively. Plus it is rather pricey.
Coinidentally I have now received my Space NK sale order that included a Fekkai shea butter styling cream. I will be trying that out in the morning. Have you tried that? My hair is wavy/curly and a bit prone to being too volumised if not soothed with something.
Oh, I hope you like it! Phytojoba smells lovely.
DeleteI've never tried the Fekkai shea butter cream. I bought the Glossing Cream when the brand first came to the UK and found it tamed a bit too well - even a small amount made my hair too floppy, but that one was quite silicone-heavy - the Shea Butter looks less so.
The only product from Phyto that I tried was the Phytorhum shampoo and while I didn't like it (it made my hair look very dry and frizzy) I loved the scent, yum! Phytobaume sounds like a nice conditioner and I have been tempted a few times before to try the Phyto-7.
ReplyDeleteI think they've discontinued that one - I tried it years ago and I don't remember it making my hair dry but it did make it HUGE :S It did smell nice though :) The Phyto 7 is excellent.
DeleteI like phyto. These smell like professional hair dressers shampoos...
ReplyDeletexxxx
They do smell lovely.
DeleteLike Klara I have only tried the Phytorhum which I wasn't taken with much but my scalp and hair are incredibly difficult as I have flakiness/irritation/fine hair. I have some sachets of a few other products which I've yet to give a go so I'm hoping one will be right.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review as it's reminded me I need to look at Phyto more closely.
Hi Meeta - I'd definitely recommend giving Phytoapaisant a go if that's one you have a sample of.
Deletewaterproof hair? I recognize the sensitive scalp issue and the fact that hair-ends can get really frizzy for no particular reason (gonna review Phylia de M Connect soon and adress this issue). The shampoo sounds good but I'm really curious about the Secret de Nuit: I'll watch this space
ReplyDeleteWaterproof hair. It is the strangest thing. My husband always complained how difficult it is to wash/rinse his hair and I thought he was just being lazy until Miss London inherited his hair. You have to really work to get the hair wet - if you don't do a shampooing motion when you're wetting it water seems to just run off the top layer.
DeleteWorking on the Secret de Nuit review!
I quite liked the shampoo I tried from them but I hate the bottle, I find it so hard to get the right amount out. I do want to try the conditioner next though. x
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about the bottle - there is no give in it. Better than the glass ones though! :)
DeleteI tried phyto but always found it to heavy for my hair. I also prefer lines with less iffy (sulfates etc) ingredients. My current faves are intelligent nutrients pure luxe, and john masters bare and hibiscus/honey. I also adore aesop's rose hair mask. Laura
ReplyDeleteHi Laura - oh, that Aesop hair mask is gorgeous. Yes, it'd be good to see Phyto without any sulfates, but that does tend to up the price of haircare quite a lot, and I do like Phyto as a gentle, semi-affordable range. My favourite shampoo and conditioner are still the Rahua ones which are brilliant, but do cost an arm and a leg! I didn't get on with Intelligent Nutrients at all the first time around (a few years ago), but maybe the formulas have changed on relaunch.
DeleteHi grace, yes the rahua line is expensive, that is why I never use it... John masters and in are ok though price wise. Yes, in has a new line that came out a couple of months ago (luxe) and I like it a lot (I also did not like the peppermint scented line). Laura
ReplyDeleteOh, I will have to have another look at IN, thanks for that!
Deletealways looking for good haircare that not ridiculous- at the moment i'm shamefully hooked on shu uemura- but it is SO expensive i now hardly wash my hair...oh dear
