Ilia Beauty Mascara in Shadow of a Doubt

Ilia Beauty released mascaras last autumn, and I bought Shadow of a Doubt, the ash brown shade. You can see the ingredients in the picture above - it's a cleaner formula that uses plant oils and waxes.

The brush is a rubber bristle. Ilia designed the tube opening to wipe off all excess, and I never have to wipe the brush. It does require some welly to get the brush out though, and a bit of faff to get it back in the tube - you have to have the tube and brush perfectly lined up.
Swatch to compare with a Chantecaille black mascara and a brown Dior mascara. I chose the Dior mascara specifically because it was a cooler brown - I prefer that to a warmer brown.
Side by side comparison of the Ilia and the Dior. Apparently my makeup super talents have developed from buying the same shade of lipstick or eyeshadow over and over again into the field of buying the same colour of mascara (black doesn't count - that would be no challenge).

Eye with no mascara:
After - the lashes are subtly defined and more polished/glossy, without adding much length or thickness. I prefer a very natural lash look - often all I want from a mascara is to take away the dusty look that lashes get when you apply eyeshadow. If you prefer a more dramatic look, I'd recommend the Dior instead. It's easy to remove, and doesn't flake or smear during the day (unless you get caught in a snow blizzard).
I bought this from www.beingcontent.com in the UK, where it costs £20.

  1. I am so happy that you reviewed it! I am really in love with the ilia mascara (i have the black shade). I find it is buildable and I can achieve a full look easily, although lashes look longer and feathery rather than thick. I find it quite similar effect wise to dior show, though much cleaner! Laura

    1. Hi Laura - the more I use it, the more I like it. It's a very nice formulation.

  2. ooh, interesting. I've not seen this before. And it's cheaper than ByTerry! Is it waterproof? I'm looking for a non waterproof mascara and hate that they all seem to be wp these days... How does it compare to the old Shu Basic?

    Thanks!

    1. Oh Jo, this is not a bad substitute for the Basic actually! It's not waterproof, it removes easily with normal cleanser.

  4. Ooh... am ordering one ASAP. Thanks for sharing this. I am always wiping loads of product off the wand and it seems so wasteful. It looks great on you! Very natural.

  5. I like the look it gives to your lashes, though think my sad little lashes need something a bit more hefty ;) I'll be interested to see what other products they add to the range x

  6. Got the mascara. Love the packaging, the colour, the brush, everything. But - it killed my curl! First mascara to do that in ages and a bit of a disappointment. I'll try again tomorrow and curl for longer.
