Black Honey is a dulled brown plum. I don't believe there is such a thing as a universally flattering colour and I wouldn't recommend this for anyone with very light or clear colouring, but for more muted/dark colouring it is a very good natural lip colour. I prefer Dior Addict 783 Londres for a natural lip look on myself (it's more mauve, less brown) but Black Honey is a more subtle finish.
Swatch on white paper:
On my lips - it deepens the natural colour of my lip but without adding brightness.

Somehow every lipstick looks so good on you. Though I am surprised how sheer the shade is.
ReplyDeleteI tend to stick to quite a narrow plum/rose spectrum though - warmer browns and pale nudes are rancid on me :D These are really, really sheer. I guess that's how they get away with the universal claims.
DeleteIt looks really nice on you. But yeah I agree about their being able to claim it's a universal shade 'cause it's sheer.
ReplyDeleteThat is too sheer for my taste, but it looks great on you!
ReplyDeleteI forgot how wearable this color is! These claims for universally flattering makes me snort. That color would be clear, I would suspect. :)
ReplyDeleteIt does look very nice on you!
I tried this years ago and didn't like it. Now that I am into brown/plum shades, I should give it another try. It does look good on you.
ReplyDeleteI suspect it'd still be a bit too brown for you - would be interested to know if you do try it!
DeleteI spent a good deal of the last 10 years trying convince myself this 'universal' colour didn't look yuck on me! *brainwashed by marketing*
ReplyDeleteThose marketing people *wags finger*
DeleteI've bought Black Honey more than once over the years because I kept falling for the "universal" claim--and it really doesn't suit me (too brown, oddly severe despite its sheerness). So thank you for pointing out that it isn't for everyone! I always thought I must be lacking in some way to be unable to wear it. Rather pathetic, really.
ReplyDeleteI have the same issue with 'nude' lips Sam - the 'There's a nude for everyone' thing had me trying to make these work for years. I look much better with more colour on the lips though.
DeleteI've never been able to wear any of the Black Honey products. I know they are loved but they don't look good with my complexion.
ReplyDeleteThis used to be one of my Holy Grail lipsticks back in college! I haven't purchased it for years...but, I always did love the shade. :)
ReplyDeleteThis was one of my first lipsticks! It's been 15 years since I bought it, and I don't see myself buying it again any time soon.
ReplyDeleteThis looks so wonderful on you! I am going to have to go swatch it to see if it looks good on me. Have a lovely weekend!
ReplyDeleteI do really like this shade, it's one of the first lipsticks I ever bought and I still have one in my bag (not the same one you'll be happy to know!)and it's one of the great "your lips but better" colours!
ReplyDeleteBest, Lisamarie
That looks really nice on you, I bought this a while back and it was a bit meh on me, so think you are spot on about this not being the best for very light colourings x
ReplyDeleteHey R - it depends on what you're looking for - it's sheer so it's wearable on lots of people, but IMO not the best/most flattering shade for very delicate colouring. x
DeleteSorry, I don't agree with you. I've been buying Black Honey for years; I keep it in my purse as my default lipstick. I'm very pale, with silver hair & I love the way it looks, kinda gothy, but not too thick or dark.

Hi N - disagreeing is encouraged, and your colouring sounds lovely.
DeleteThere are different shades of the Black Honey line. I use the Black Honey Chic and it's the most flattering shade on me ever. They run a broad spectrum (pinks, browns, plums, reds...) so check it out.
ReplyDeleteDoes this wear well? I'd love to have a sample to try and not buy because of the expense involved. I have white hair/blue eyes...hmmm? wonder if this would look okay on me.
