I like grey eyeliner; it's softer than black and is a good alternative when a brown eyeliner is too brown/warm if you are specifically looking for a cool/neutral eyeliner.
Laura Mercier Kohl Eyeliner Pencils are very soft and smudgeable, and good for the type of soft definition I prefer. You can't get a very precise line with these and they do smudge even when you might not intend them to, so I wouldn't recommend if you want a sharp line.
Comparison with a couple of other grey eyeliners I own: left Laura Mercier Stormy Grey kohl pencil, centre NARS London eyeliner pencil, right NARS Madison Avenue larger than life longwear eyeliner.
Stormy Grey is darker than London and has a little sheen (London is a flat cream finish). Madison Avenue is much bluer-toned, and is impossible to blend out. I don't like the NARS Larger than Life eyeliner formula at all - I much prefer the softer, smudgier Laura Mercier and the original NARS eyeliner formula. I do like to smudge pencil eyeliner though.
Laura Mercier Stormy Grey applied, no other eye makeup in this picture.
Laura Mercier Kohl Eye Pencils are £15.50 each.

I do love me some soft eyeliners! This one sounds very nice.
ReplyDeleteI do like the look of that eye liner. I wear quite a bit of grey too, somehow more interesting than brown on brown eyes and more subtle than black. However the Nars Madison Avenue does look quite a chilly grey, perhaps better suited to an icy blonde!
ReplyDeleteI have the Nars larger than life pencil in navy (can't remember the name) and I find it okay. My eyes are quite hooded so the fact that it doesn't smudge is quite helpful otherwise I end up with a line of eye liner on my socket.
Hi Grace,
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you about softness of them. I love Laura Mercier eyeliner pencils a lot. Stormy Grey is great alternative to dark browns. Today I am wearing Antique Jade and I recommend it as well as Black Turquoise and Black Gold. All of them are interesting and more nuanced alternatives to blacks and browns if you have brown eyes.
I prefer grey eyeliners too; I like the softer look of them.
ReplyDeleteI have one of these, I think it's called 'Black Violet'? I like it ... for a good while I thought I hated it because I kept wearing it on the waterline and ending up with too much smudging down under my eyes.
ReplyDeleteI think the word 'kohl' just tells me that it should be good for the waterline!
But used as a smudgy eyeliner on the upper lash line I've had a lot more success.
The color looks very natural on you.
