Chantecaille Faux Cils Longest Lash

If I'd known how much this mascara cost before I bought it, I probably wouldn't have. The 'How the heck much?!' moment at the till was in respect of the £55 price tag (it's actually £60, but I had a £5 NDulge reward, which obviously makes all the difference). I won't be buying (m)any other colour cosmetics this month.

With the price out of the way, this is a really good mascara. It lengthens quite dramatically and doesn't clump. I don't find it overly thickening, but I don't like piled on mascara so it's likely that a more dramatic effect is possible with more coats. It does not weigh down a curl, doesn't feel crunchy, doesn't flake and removes easily with my usual makeup remover/cleanser. I also like the shape of the brush:
Not too wide, not too tapered (I don't like christmas tree mascara brushes) and densely packed. I was trying to decide between the Chantecaille Faux Cils and the By Terry Terrybly mascara, and it was the brush that decided it (obviously I was unaware of the thirty quid price difference between the two at the time.) Both formulae claim to build stronger lashes; if you're in your twenties or early thirties you probably don't need this sort of thing, but as you age the lashes, like your hair and skin, do get drier. I've only been using this for a week, but my lashes do seem to be more flexible and in better condition even after removing my makeup. It claims to make natural lashes look longer and fuller after two weeks.

Before applying (after curling lashes).
With mascara applied (I didn't do any extra curling between the two pictures - the extra lift is from the mascara.)
I'm quite torn, because I do like this mascara, but the £60 price tag is obscene. I will enjoy using it, but will probably try the Terrybly one when I next need to change my mascara.

Similar mascaras I've tried: Lancome Hypnose Precious Cells gives a similar effect, but I'd rather buy from an independent line than a L'Oreal one, and the Lancome smudged more.

I found I rarely bothered with the serum from the Sue Devitt Lash Intensifier and Lengthening Mascara, and the formula of the mascara itself dried out a bit too quickly for my liking.

  1. I really don't think this mascara is worth the money at all. There's other mascaras for a fraction of the price that are as good or better!!

    1. Have you tried it too? I expect to pay more for the serum/peptide thingy, but not quite that much more! :D

  2. Cringe! That mascara looks lovely, and I am a sucker for a premium product but not sure I could part with £55 for a mascara.

I don't like the L'Oreal brands either so it is good to know about alternatives. I have the DJV Beautenizer - shocking name but I think it is really good. No smudging or clogging.

The hourglass mascara is on my (long!) lust list.

    1. I considered not blogging it because it is ridiculous. I like the serum/peptide mascaras and did expect to pay about £30-£35ish for it. Will give the ByTerry a go next - unless this one gives me Liz Taylor lashes in the end, when I might try to justify the price!

  3. I hate it when you get to the till and something is more expensive that you think, you want to just say no and walk away but you feel compelled to go through with it. I think I would have wept a little tear at the price of this. It does sound good and I like how it looks on you but for the price it would has to be amazing or I'd need a better paid job ;) x

    1. Like I said - Liz Taylor lashes. Or ELSE ;)

  4. I definitely think I'd have turned into my Mum and shouted "How Much?" and put it back in a super theatrical manner. I'm shocked that it's so much more than similar products. However, the effect is very nice and I do prefer mascaras that keep my lashes feeling soft. I might have to investigate the By Terry version.

    1. I would suggest starting with the By Terry. How often is By Terry the budget option? :D

  5. Wow, I hadn't expected it to be that much! I've previously bought the Faux Cils and while it was good, it wasn't any better than mascaras half of that price.

I have liked the Cargo Lash Activator mascara, the comb is more rubber/plastic bristle (but not massive) and it gives a lovely even, deep black lash look and I did notice it helped my lashes grow in length but also even the look of the lash line. Needs a good remover though as it is very black.

    1. Thanks Meeta - I'll add that one to my list to try.

  6. That is not a 60 pound mascara. I can't believe the price. You absolutely had to blog about it since you bought it, it at least justifies it a little. I rarely ask the price first but maybe this is a warning to me.

    1. ASK. Especially at the Chantecaille counter ;)

  7. I actually stumbled across this online a few months ago and was stunned by the pricing. Then (obviously) morbidly curious. Thank you so much for reviewing it and taking one for the team!

    1. It's public service stupidity ;) I'm glad I've tried it, will be interested how it compares to the By Terry.

  8. Ouch! That is one epic price tag. It does look lovely, but considering I wince at handing over £23 for my Diorshow I think this might have to be forgotten about until I'm feeling (very) flush!

    1. It is astounding for a mascara - it'll teach me not to check the price before I get to the til :D

  9. Hi Grace,

I bought the same mascara two weeks ago and despite the crazy price, I will rebuy when I run out. My eyelashes are longer when I remove my mascara and they now have a slight curl. I've tried the Chantecaille one w/o serum as well as the By Terry one - this is far superior.

    1. Hello - so I might have Liz Taylor lashes to look forward to then? :) I do really like it, I am torn on the price. I'd rather buy one thing that is amazing than 5 things I don't love though.

  10. Hi again! I'm really sorry but do you mind deleting my previous comment? I just realised it sounds a bit judgemental and I didn't want it to... sorry again but thank you for the review and I do hope you do a follow up post, I'm very curious about your ideas in this mascara! Thanks, Ana!

    1. Hi Ana Marta - I thought it was absolutely fine and not judgemental at all, but I've deleted it for you :)

I will do a follow up post - hate to say it, but I am actually really liking this mascara!

  11. Holy moly! I feel guilty for buying DiorShow!
I genuinely could not justify spending that on mascara, unless it gives me doll-like lashes on a semi-permanent basis.

  12. Ugh - just wrote lengthy reply and it got eaten. In short - I can't justify 60 quid for a mascara no matter how brilliant it is! I've been looking for ages for a good natural looking mascara to replace the Shu Basic and bought the ByTerry one last week. I love it so far and really recommend it if you can't maintain the Chante habit. I'm not sure about all the lash growing/strengthening claims but if they work, then that's an added bonus. I'm finding this natural, it holds a curl, not crunchy, the brown is a gorgeous colour, I like the brush, it doesn't clump (even when applying a 2nd coat later in the day (altho I combed thru lashes). For me it does the job and cost per ml it's not so bad compared to other mascaras (so says my nerdy spreadsheet...)! ;)

    1. Hi Jo - I love the idea of the spreadsheet :) I won't repurchase the Chantecaille - it's just too pricey. I shall give the ByTerry a go next, thank you.
