Topshop Crayon in Ramble and Kohl in Saddle

I made my first trip into Topshop in about a decade after reading this post on Drivel About Frivol, which was similarly sparked by this post on Mascara Magic. I have and love a By Terry Ombre Blackstar and the idea of getting other colours for £7.50 instead of £26 appealed to me enough to make me willing to double the average age of the inhabitants of Topshop Oxford Circus one lunchtime.

I also swatched the Kohl pencil in Saddle, and bought that too. For £4, it is every bit as good as pencils that have cost me 4-5 times that amount and more. It's one of the smudgeable pencils that I like for soft definition - not good if you like a sharp line, but perfect if, like me, you prefer more diffused definition.
Swatched, Kohl top, Crayon bottom. The Crayon is really very similar in texture to the By Terry Ombre Blackstar I own, and from the ingredients list the base formula is almost identical; the By Terry does have the luxurious additions of Tourmaline and Pearl Powder, but whether that is worth an extra £20 is a personal judgement call. The Topshop Crayon is similarly smudgeable for a couple of minutes before setting, and once it sets it lasts all day. Both the Topshop Kohl and the Crayon are made in Italy (like the By Terry Ombre Blackstar.)

Saddle is a neutral dark brown with warmer shimmer. Ramble is a medium/dark chocolate brown with gold micro-sparkles.
Swatch of the Crayon blended.
Both applied. I make a messy line with the Kohl next to my lashes, daub the Crayon over the top of it on my lid and then blend up into my crease with a fingertip.
Yes, I am already planning to go back to Topshop and buy other colours in the Crayon; I want the taupe-y Mystical and pink-beige Whisper. The Kohl only comes in brown and black.

  1. That eyeliner instantly sucked me in, it reminds me of MAC Teddy eye kohl. I was all over the Topshop website after your nail post the other day and this post send me back. I can't decide if buying a crayon would be breaking my ban. What do we think?

PS. Genius new category there :D

    1. Could we streeeeeetch the boundaries and call this an eyeshadow base? I think we'd both know it was cheating though.

      Thanks :)

  2. Oh wow, those swatches look amazing. I'm very impressed with both yours and Kate's review - I might stop at Topshop soon. Only thing is that I've only just bought too By Terry ombre blackstars :-( if it wasn't for the different colours I'd feel really cheated! Ana xx

PS - agree with Modesty Brown on the new category, up there with the "google world domination" one :-D

    1. Well, the By Terry does come in lovely colours - the Topshop ones are quite basic neutrals. Thank you :D

  3. I heard a rumour that the Topshop makeup is made in the same factory as Clinique......

Either way, it is amazing quality for the price!

    1. I hadn't heard that rumour, but they are excellent quality.

  4. Very nice, but I am not fond of the packaging, probably not enough to prevent purchase, but if I am going to wince each time I take it out to use it then no matter how cheap it is a waste of money for me. I know, I am shallow, I hold my hands up and admit it!

    1. I quite like the Topshop packaging - it's quite classic/funky and not so cheap that it's worth the extra £20 for me.

  5. They look like excellent bargain finds. And well done on only doubling the age in Top Shop - I would triple it.

    1. I did catch myself briefly glancing at the clothes, but then moved swiftly away!

  6. I like the eye look :) Well I am impressed with the topshop crayon, though I still think By Terry is better as had a tad more slip so blends the edges easier and I think it applies smoother on more mature eyelids (I used both on my mother to compare). That said I think the topshop one is nearly there and given the price difference I think the topshop is a good option x

  7. NIce colors. Thanks for the post. I'm trying to find a bronze liquid or gel liner, which is apparently impossible, but add to that that it can't have been tested on animals, and I'm out of luck probably. I've emailed Topshop and await their reply on the animal testing -I know their site says no, and miraculously, they don't yet sell in China as far as I can tell, so, I might be in half-luck!

My question to you is: if I get the crayon, is it possible to use a brush and apply it like a liner do you think? I like a thin line. Thank you! rachel

    1. Hi Rachel - doesn't Bobbi Brown have a bronze gel liner? The Lauder group does sell in China though. I'd hope the Topshop statement on animal testing on their website is true - it's pretty clear. I'll have a go with the crayon and a brush and get back to you - I don't think it'll be that easy to do buy I will check.

    2. Grace, thanks so much for offering to try - I thought maybe with a stiff brush, but, it depends on how soft the crayon is maybe. It seems crazy to me that Urban Decay for example doesn't have a bronze liner. Oh well. Silly to be so bent on it I guess. Topshop says they don't test their products ...except where required by law - the typical caveat these days. That means they test on animals -somewhere. r.

    3. Hi Rachel - it works, it actually works really well and the colour lasts all day. I just used a normal flat liner brush from Bobbi Brown. I took a picture, I'll put it up over the weekend.

The caveat disappoints me - their website statement is much more definite.

    4. Yay, Grace. Thanks so much! Look forward to seeing it if you get around to posting.

Err, I misspoke above about Topshop's policy re testing on animals. I haven't actually heard back from them yet. I conflated them in my menopausal mind with Smashbox, that I had also emailed. So sorry to all. I wouldn't want any company that doesn't test on animals to have misinformation out there about them! Gah. Sorry. Grace, feel free to strike out my words or something --not sure what the protocol is on blogs about that. rachel

    5. Hi Rachel - thanks for that - I was surprised given their statement! The clarification is fine - it isn't possible to delete bits of comments on blogs.

Smashbox surprises me much less - they manufacture some of their products in China now, and I assume any cosmetics made in China are potentially tested on animals.

Ramble eyeliner post is going up in a minute :)

  8. The TS crayons are indeed worth every buck and able to shame some pricier brands. I need a few more too ;)

  9. Looking at this comparison makes me realize how overpriced the by Terry is. I just have to justify that I don't have Topshop but I did make it to Space NK!

    1. I think that it's true of most high end lines, we just don't have such a direct comparison! The by Terry does have some extra 'luxury' ingredients in it.
