Jo Malone Scent Surround Diffuser

Reed diffusers have become very popular in home fragrance over the last couple of years, so when Jo Malone recently expanded their For The Home range, it was no surprise to see some reed diffusers appear.

Reed diffusers give a constant gentle throw of scent, and are good for situations where you don't want to leave a candle burning. I wouldn't leave them within reach of a child though; they won't burn the house down but they would make a mess (and an almighty smell) if upended by toddler hands.

As well as the new diffusers, Jo Malone also has a couple of limited edition home products, available in Lime, Basil & Mandarin only; scented drawer liners and scent sachets for the wardrobe.

The customary black on ivory Jo Malone livery has been reversed for the home range to ivory on black boxes. It still looks distinctively Jo Malone, and makes a lovely gift.
I was sent the Red Roses Scent Surround Diffuser, and it smells exactly like the Red Roses Cologne to me, although at a more diluted concentration. It also comes in Pomegranate Noir and Lime, Basil & Mandarin.
The silver lid on the bottle of fragrance oil unscrews, and the black cap pops out. The silver lid goes back on, and you poke the reeds through the hole.
If you want to up the strength of the scent periodically, I find taking the reeds out and turning them the other way around works well.

The Scent Surround Diffusers are £45 for 165ml, and are available from www.jomalone.co.uk as well as the usual stockists. I'd expect a diffuser of this size to last about 4-5 months.

Disclosure: PR sample.

  1. I'm really tempted by these but do worry about little hands fiddling which has happened before with one of my diffusers. I'm not sure which fragrance to go for, I wonder if the Lime, Basil and Mandarin might be best for the downstairs?

    1. I'm using the Red Roses downstairs (kitchen diner, can sometimes smell a bit rubbish-y, and a diffuser takes care of that). It's not too girly girly for me and Mr L likes what I tell him to like, but LBM would probably be more unisex.

I keep mine out of harm's way - top shelf of a fixed bookcase. I would recommend doing the same :)

  2. I only did a quick browse through the JM section in Selfridge's last week. Now I wish I'd seen these. Thanks for posting, I'll look for them again.

    1. Hi Ali - have a look in the basement at Selfridges too - they have loads of different brands of reed diffuser down there - I bought a lovely one for Ma (before the JM ones came out).

  3. So gorgeous - but the price! I've used White Company before - do you think these are more concentrated / last longer? (I'm looking for a reason to buy, really!)

    1. Hi - it is expensive. There is no doubt that with JM you are often paying for the brand, as well as the quality. It does give very good throw of the scent though. I think if you absolutely adore one of the three scents it is worth paying for, but if you simply want a good reed diffuser there are others that do the job well too - I like Abode Aroma.

  5. This looks perfect. I like Jo Malone scents as such but somehow have a hard time wearing them. But I wouldn't mind my bedroom smelling like her fragrances :) thanks for the tip!

  6. I bought the Pomegranate Noir one last weekend. (Dispatched my husband to purchase at Heathrow Terminal 5 and they were all sold out), so bought locally here in France. We are using it in our bedroom. I've previously had another brand, (Linari) which was very, very expensive but which lasted well over a year - so I think diffusers are better value than candles if you get a good quality one. Our room is though very large (30 square metres) with very high ceilings and so the scent gets a bit lost unless you're very close to it. It is however true to the perfume, subtle yet strong - and I would really recommend them. Hope they bring out the sachets in other scents too.

I agree - I commented myself on how smart the packaging was and these would make really lovely gifts.

  7. I can't really have candles burning so this would be a great alternative. Packaging is beautiful and the actual product would look so beautiful anywhere in the home..think I may be requesting this for my upcoming birthday! Thanks for the great review!
