I saw this look as done by Pixiwoo's Sam Chapman and really loved it: http://youtu.be/MqNOcUoqA2I . I like that it isn't too done, and messy application is something I can hope to achieve ;)
I've adopted a toned-down version using my Viseart palette - middle row right shade (slightly yellowed mid-brown) all over the lid, well into crease and under eyes, bottom row right (darker chestnut brown) along lashline, outer v of mobile lid and blended underneath. I used Rouge Bunny Rouge black kohl pencil for the liner - I really like how concentrating the liner on the outer half of the upper and lower lash line seems to elongate the eyes. I also like a warmer version using the two middle row left shades instead.
I've enjoyed stepping out of my usual tasteful taupe comfort zone, and I like a version of a messy rock look that doesn't rely on a ton of black shadow. I am not feeling the spring pastel collections at all this year, and this morning-after-the-night-before look is more in tune with my general mood. Taking shadow this far under the eye can make you look a bit tired, but that's all part of the effect; I'd rather fake looking like I've stayed up all night than actually do it nowadays!

I'm trying my version of this today ... but I am actually using a metallic eyeshadow, because I don't have a matte in the right sort of color. I like the kinda tired look .. it just suits some faces well.
ReplyDeleteI used Shu eyeshadow in IR Earth Brown (Spring 2008 collection), and a blackish mini Shu pencil eyeliner from a set of 3 mini pencils they did a couple years back, it's not a true strong black, which made it easier to work with.
I only really needed two brushes, through I used 3 ... and then brows and a bit of something on the lips and it's a pretty good face of makeup if you're having a good skin day and don't *really* need anything on your skin. (Nice to give the skin a rest, too.) To be honest, it looked pretty good pre-mascara too.
I think using a sort of metallic shadow worked fine, I just blended well and *didn't* pack it on. It's got that sort of messy rock look ... but it's easy to tone it down or go further with it.
If I added some Bejeweled Skylark, or even just concentrated the color I did use more around the lashline this would be pretty dramatic.
Hi Proximity - I think it works well with an otherwise bare face too, so handy for days when you've only got 5 minutes to do something. The Shu IR are a lovely texture of eyeshadow, I can see that working well for this.
DeleteThis is such a gorgeous palette, I just recently discovered its existence and it made it all the way to the top of my wishlist (I really need to transfer to matte as my eyelids really start to sag and wrinkle now, noooooooo!). Now the challenge will be to stay on my no buy until all debts have been aid and I have a little something something to make this Viseart treasure my own :) I just love the subtle look, how pretty!
ReplyDeleteLove a nice neutral eye this is a really lovely look and works well with your brown eyes!
ReplyDeleteHello DL - I love this palette. Some mattes can be even worse on (ahem) maturing eyelids as they can be a bit dry-looking, but these are perfect. It's a great target to help you stick to your no-buy!
ReplyDeleteHello Smokeyeyesmua - thank you! It looks really stunning on blue eyes like Sam Pixiwoo.
ReplyDeleteThat is sexay! I do like the subtle "messiness" of it! Great job!
