I received a Chantecaille Violetta Lip Chic in my christmas stocking this year. The Lip Chics are glossy, but not really very sheer - they're like a lipstick with the white opaque pigment base taken out and replaced with a translucent gel-gloss base. These are very comfortable, hydrating lipsticks, although they do need to be reapplied quite frequently.
Violetta was released in Autumn 2011 with Calla Lily, and is a cool violet pink.
Applied on my lips:

Here is a swatch to compare it with Calla Lily, which is a warmer brick red shade. Calla Lily on left, Violetta on right.
The tone of Violetta reminded me of my Ilia Beauty lipstick in Arabian Knights - my full post on this is here: Ilia Beauty review. I swatched the two side by side, and Arabian Knights (left) is similar in tone, although the swatch appears sheerer than Violetta (right). This swatch of Violetta is heavier than the ones above; it's a soft lipstick and distressingly easy to smush too much on!
Although the swatch is sheerer, I find the Ilia Pure Arabian Knights to be reasonably buildable, and the effect when worn (below) is quite similar. I also find the colour of the Ilia Pure lasts longer as it gently stains the lip.
Chantecaille Violetta is beautiful and the Lip Chic is a lovely formulation. If you only need one sheer berry lip tint, I would recommend the Ilia Beauty Arabian Knights though. I slightly prefer the formula and smell of the Ilia Beauty, and it isn't as soft as the Lip Chics.Chantecaille is available from Fenwicks and Space NK, Ilia Beauty is available from www.MiseBeauty.com and www.BeingContent.com.

I am very fond of Lip Chics! Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteVioletta is very pretty, and I also love Lip Chic. Do you know how Violetta compares to Chante Lip Chic in Damask? I am curious is Damask is more or less brown. (Trying to avoid brown in my lipsticks now and go for the more blue-based ones.)
ReplyDeleteHI Jamilla - they are lovely lipsticks.
ReplyDeleteHi ZP - Violetta has no brown tones at all to my eye. I think it's a bit brighter than Damask, which is more of a dulled berry to my eye. I don't own Damask though - the only other ones I have are Amaryllis, which is a very bright red-pink and Bourbon Rose, a more muted rose.
Thanks, Grace. I'm going to have to try it. I love a cool, clear berry on my lips.
ReplyDeleteI have also been considering GOSH's lip balm in Perfect Plum, which is half the price but not as big, either.
I completely agree with you Grace. I also prefer Arabian Knights due to the formula. I have three Lip Chics and although I love the colour and effect, the need for frequent re-application ends up drying my lips (although they are admittedly very dry to begin with). Like you, I love the slight stain left behind by the Ilia and I was very happy to find out the last time I visited Conten Beauty that she is coming up with new colours...looking forward to those.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the thorough review Grace :)

Argh! I wished I'd read this before I placed my Content order! I like both formulas but you've never guided me wrong. This can go on my next order ;)
ReplyDeleteLove this colour on you. Your brows look fantastic in these pics too!
ReplyDeleteThis shade looks lovely on you. I also like the 1st face shot very much, you look stern and mysterious with a good measure of disapproval (still beautiful). Anyway, one look and I replaced my morning muffin for dried mango!
ReplyDeleteOC - lol! I did think the first picture was quite frowny, but it shows the lipstick colour best. I shall market myself as a diet aid ;)
ReplyDeleteMB, Dempss and Inthesweetshop - thank you. I do think the Lip Chic are very fleeting - they feel nice when they're on, but I prefer the longevity of the Ilia.
Both really suit you, though your description steers me toward Ilia Beauty, I was thinking about going for one of their lighter shades but think I'll have to add Arabian Knights now :) x
