Sappho Organic Cosmetics Liquid Foundation

I wrote recently about being introduced to Sappho Cosmetics at the launch of the www.nutribeautyproducts.com website, and I was subsequently invited to a Sappho Cosmetics UK launch/introductory event. The line was created by makeup artist JoAnn Fowler while working on the programme The L Word, and it was formulated in response to some of the actresses' concerns about the ingredients in mainstream cosmetics. All of the products are paraben, mineral oil and silicone free. Additionally, the liquid foundation contains skin beneficial ingredients like DMAE and MSM, as well as various plant and essential oils.

Ms Fowler was kind enough to match me to a foundation shade herself, and picked out Leisha. A swatch to show the colour is below. Leisha is a fair, neutral shade, and is the second lightest shade in the liquid foundation. The shades are named after the actresses on The L Word, and an image search for the 'actress name + The L Word' is actually quite a good way to narrow down the correct colour choice for you.
Blended out. I put a lot on my hand to show the colour, but it blends in well and doesn't gather in lines on my hand.
Picture applied. I've applied it quite heavily for this photograph, but it doesn't look heavy on the skin. Leisha is a perfect match for my skin tone. The formulation is aloe vera based, feels light on the skin, but isn't drying. I think it would suit a range of skin types, from moderately oily to moderately dry.
Close up picture.
The only caution I'd give with this foundation is that the light reflective particles can give a tiny sparkle under bright artificial lights. I've taken a picture of my blended hand swatch using flash, and you can just see the scattered sparkles

  1. This looks like an interesting brand, and it is useful to have the colours named after actual people.
What type of coverage does this give?

  2. Hi Meeta - it's buildable up to quite good coverage - I'd say medium - I don't use concealer on my undereyes or around nose with this. It's hard to tell as this colour is a perfect match for me!

  3. That is a great match. I was looking at their products in the Nutribeauty magazine and wondered how good they would be. Of course the name makes much more sense now!

  4. I like this very much on you, having seen your face in pics for probably as long as you have had a blog I have to say that this really does look like your skin but better - might seem like a weird thing to say seeing as I have not seen your skin in real life, but I can see that your skin is clear and even and this seems to bring it alive - maybe it's the sparkles ;-) Nice post thankyou

  5. The ingredients list looks really good! I'm tempted to order, but I'm not sure I can risk picking a foundation colour over the internet.. hmm. Beth

  7. Ooo I am v tempted by this now! I still have a mad hankering for Vapour still though. How do they compare coverage & performance wise. The sample I tried of Vapour was almost a little too sheer but my skin loved it. I need a little more than a whisper light coverage unfortunately

  8. Hi Victoria - at the risk of being completely unhelpful, I find it hard to gauge coverage because I don't need much myself, so I can't really tell the difference between light/medium/heavy coverage! I'd say this is medium - I'd need concealer on a spot, but not undereye circles.

  9. Hi Beth - if you can work out your rough depth from the descriptions, I'd recommend googling the actresses to see their skintones. I found that really useful.

  10. Thanks for this as I have been interested in this after you last mentioned it. I am very tempted, the only thing holding me back are the essential oils given how intolerant my skin is, I might well give it a whirl though x

  11. It definitely has a great list of ingredients, I would like to read more about this brand.

  12. I'm pretty sure this doesn't come in a shade light enough for me which is a shame ... I'm really looking for something that's an excellent color match, and without any nasty ingredients (or anything else that my skin will hate).

  13. Hi Replica - hmm. It has quite a distinctive scent when you first apply. It's a shame that they don't have samples online, buying a full bottle of foundation is a risk, especially as you can't return it.

    Hi Mary - thank you!

hello Proximity - Mia is a lighter, pinker, shade. Have you had a look at the OCC Skin Tints? They don't have mineral oil or silicones in, and the lightest shades look very light.

  14. Hey Grace,
I haven't seen the OOC Skin Tints, thanks for the suggestion :)
I really think it's insane that it's so difficult to get samples of foundations - surely of ALL makeup/beauty products foundation/concealer must be the one category where try-before-you-buy is the most essential. (Perfume too, but it's easier to get perfume samples.)
