Tom Ford Violet Fatale Lip Color review

I visited the Selfridges Tom Ford counter with a friend last week, and inevitably I ended up making a couple of purchases. One of them was the Lip Colo(u)r in Violet Fatale.

Swatches of Violet Fatale compared with three similar shades from the original Private Blend lipsticks (all three now discontinued). Violet Fatale sits somewhere between Pure Pink and Moroccan Rouge in the colour spectrum, although it is more blue (violet) based than either of those. It is a more vivid pink and less purple than you might expect from the colour in the bullet.
Applied to my lips. This is one relatively light coat; the intensity can be built up further although it never gets as dark as it looks in the bullet.
In context of the rest of my face. I'm wearing a light dusting of Wicked Cheek Colo(u)r on my cheeks, the Eyebrow Pencil in Taupe (review coming soon) and W3LL People Narcissist foundation as concealer. No other cosmetics used. This is probably the closest match to Pure Pink in the new lipsticks, although Pure Pink is a bit warmer and a little softer. My review of Pure Pink is here: Tom Ford Pure Pink Lip Color.

  3. Moroccan Rouge is discontinued?! A plague on your house, Tom Ford!

(then again, now I don't feel so bad about buying Bobbi Brown Desert Plum, which is a near-dupe...)

  4. This is a beautiful lipstick and it looks wonderful on you (much better than what I thought it would look like based on the colour in the bullet). I also really like the shape of your eyebrows and am of course still very much jealous of your perfect skin :)

  5. I love how that looks on you. It's a really face brightening colour. It's not at all how I expected from the bullet colour though. Very interesting!

  6. Hi Jen - thank you. His lipsticks are beautiful - I have my eye on a couple of the new reds too.

Hi Jamilla - me too. It's funny, I was re-reading my review of Pure Pink, and then I wasn't too keen on pink with my skintone. Now I love a good bright pink!

Patuxxa - I'm with you. I love Moroccan Rouge, and there's nothing really like it in the new colours. Bah humbug.

Hello Klara and MB - thank you both :) The colour was unexpected for me too - I envisioned something much more purple/blue. It was a pleasant surprise though.

  8. Hi Grace, I think this color is not bad, but previous ones are more interesting and complex to my opinion :).

  9. It looks amazing with the violet streak in your hair! I would never have guessed it applies so pink from looking at it. This will have to be my replacement when my Pure Pink runs out :)

  11. This is a beautiful shade but I like Moroccan Rouge more I think.
What shade of the new lipsticks do you think would look nice on me? (would love to see them myself, sigh)

  12. Beautiful, I'll get one. I couldn't get the last year's Guerlain for Holidays but one of these will work :)

  14. Hi Marina - what sort of shade are you after? The new mid-toned pink/rose shades are good - I like Casablanca, and The Beauty Look Book has pictures of Spanish Pink, Indian Rose and Pink Adobe. There are a couple of good reds too. I thought I'd like Flamingo, but I'm really not sure about it having just swatched at the counter - I'll need to try that one out.

Goya - it's pretty, I still think Black Orchid is the most interesting of his lip colours. I still mean to try that YSL one you recommended, I've saved my Boots Points for it!

Thanks to all for the comments. x

  15. Its not about the lippie but all about the hair. Still loving that lilac missy. I think youve started quite a trend =)

  16. Having only a couple of minutes at the Selfridges counter this was the shade I was immediately drawn to. I picked up Casablanca as well but Violet Fatale really has that same face brightening quality for me as Cherry Lush and Pure Pink. It is a shame it looks so scary in the bullet as I think it is actually quite wearable. Looks lovely on you.

I can't wait to read your other reviews on the Tom Ford products now my exams are finally over! x
