Red eyeliner - would you wear it?

red eyeliner

This post on Beaut.ie about red eyeliner (gick or gorgeous, you decide) reminded me that actually, I quite like red eyeliner as a look. The Beaut.ie ladies are, it is fair to say, divided on the subject ;)

I think with a strong line and the rest of the make up kept very neutral, a red liner is quite a striking look. I posted this red eyeliner look with Suqqu eyeshadow back in February 2010, and I decided to visit the Illamasqua counter to pick up a matte red eyeshadow and a red medium pencil (Illamasqua's can be used on the eyes and lips) for a stronger look.

I bought Feisty medium pencil (coral red) and Daemon (scarlet red) powder eyeshadow. I already owned Succumb powder eyeshadow (peachy flesh-toned) which I used as a base from lash to brow before drawing the line with the Feisty pencil and going over it with Daemon powder for maximum staying power.

I used Primal blush as a contour (already owned this), and only lip balm on my lips. I did also use concealer (W3LL People), mascara (Lancome Hypnose Precious Cells) and eyebrow pen (Suqqu Moss Green).

Full face picture. I like it. Mr London says it looks quite 'ninja' (do they wear eyeliner, outside of 30 Seconds to Mars videos?) and Miss London thinks it looks 'cool, and all wing-y'.

Would you wear this, or will you be passing on the red eyeliner?

  1. I probably would, since I'm never afraid of anything edgy, but I'd probably tightline with black and use a million coats mascara or even falsies.

  2. I wear dark red liner, courtesy of Illamasqua Liquid Metal in Resolute. Fun!

  3. I might try it if I used a thin line of black first as sometimes when I've used reds and deeper pinks on my eyes I look a bit ill!

I have to say this does look very cool on you, I agree on a bit on the ninja-esque vibe.
You rock these winged eyeliner looks!

  4. I think it looks great on you, definitely ninja!! I don't think I'm edgy enough but never say never.

  5. I must say I really don't like the red! I usually up for trying new things but this is a no for me!

    Great blog!

  6. I love doing this look with the Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner in red (10), it creates a sleek, graphic line and is just right with a bit black mascara (or a lot if you find the red eyeliner on its own scary). The thing is, I think you shouldn't smudge it too much, but keep the line tidy, as otherwise you look like you just cried/have a rash. But I really like the look and somehow find it suits my blue eyes well.

  7. I was hoping you'd post on this after seeing your tweet this morning! It looks very cool on you but I think perhaps you need your dark eyes and great skin to carry it off, with my pale blue eyes and pinky skin I may just look as if I had myxomatosis!

  8. You always manage to pull off the most unusual colors, and I quite like how it looks on you. I would never be able to ear it unless I wanted my entire face to look like a boiled lobster.

  9. Hello Jenni - I don't usually publish comments that link to a commercial website, but as you're the first person to vote 'no' on the red you get a one-time-only-never-to-be-repeated pass ;)

Hi Eva - I totally agree, the line *has* to be sharp.

thanks all for the comments :D

  10. Yes I would but I would not look cool like you do..I would probably look ill.

Having said that...I do have a lovely burgundy liner and =I do fancy a RED mascara.

  11. I would and do all the time! Red is my favorite eyeliner to wear :)

  12. as fierce as it looks, i dont think my face can take it. unless its halloween. haha! a deep, darkened red might be ok for me. :)

  13. I've been looking for red eyeliner forever!
But I find the particular shade of red in the picture better suited for very blue eyes and porcelain skin.
For my brown-eyed brown-haired self, I would choose a warmer tone, maybe the look would come off as less daring, but I think it would look great.
I'm sure it would look wonderful on you (we have similar coloring): the red you are sporting is fun and avant-garde, but I don't think it flatters your (beautiful) features.

  14. Hi Zazie - Addiction by Ayako do a red eyeliner, and that's been on my wishlist for a while. Thanks very much for the thoughtful and helpful feedback - I will certainly keep an eye out for a warmer red and see how it compares. :)

  15. I would, but may be a deeper shade of red.

  16. hmm i have to say i'm not feeling this one! its fun and different but no i dont like it. darker red might be interesting but i think i just have a problem with the whole 'red' and 'eye' thing! i admit my make up tastes are a bit safe though!

  17. I think you carry it off well (kudos for the uninhibited fun you have with makeup) and I love the brow, as well as the overall balance of the rest of the face.
However, I have to agree with Zazie about the warmer-tone red probably being more flattering.
My main point though: kudos :))

  19. I like red eye make-up every now and then. I use red eyeshadow (applied in a thinnish line on outer upper corners of my eyes) out of an old Lancôme trio (here's a pic of it on eBay) http://cgi.ebay.de/Lancome-Ombre-Trio-02-Rouge-thermique-/170669436046 and a thin line of black cake eyeliner on top of it. Then black mascara and red lippie.

  20. I like red eye liner in general (loved it at Derek lam show) and like it on you.

  21. Hi Tigrushka - I remember that trio! I loved it! Fred Farrugia did some amazing collections for Lancome.

  22. I think I would wear it if I was around edgy people who also wore loud makeup hehe.

This particular pink is gorgeous and saturated, which makes it perfect for a liner.

  23. I love it, especially on someone who doesn't already have a ton of red in their face … for me to wear red eyeliner, I have to do careful foundation and concealing work to take down my natural redness, or it just makes all of it pop which isn't very attractive. I also like it better as a stark line than diffused, which can look more like allergies or something. But really, I don't see any reason why people shouldn't wear red on their eyes, I think it looks good … and another way to wear this power color for people who don't like red lips.
I also like it with no mascara, looking stark and just standing on its own.

I think if you've got a lot of red veins in your eyes, then it might be worth using those (not so good for you) 'get the red out' eyedrops on red eyeliner day … and also if your waterline is really red, then I'd use something like Paula Dorf babyeyes (or another flesh colored liner) to banish the red from your waterline.

By the way - obviously the Suqqu brow pen isn't actually green (is it?) .. but what color is it really?

  24. One wouldn't imagine so, but that's surprisingly fetching. At least, you pull it off well.

  25. Not only I would wear it but I have worn it already. Not sure I would wear it if it's a pencil. I would prefer to use a liquid eyeliner or even face paint. xx

  26. I couldn't but it looks so awesome on you! I swear you can pull ANYTHING OFF!

  27. I love red eyeliner.. haven't been brave enough to try it but always admired it on others. Now I've seen your post, I'm so going to do it!

  28. I am surprised how much I love this look on you. I have got very close to red in the past, as plums or burgundies, brown/reds tend to make the green stand out in my eyes. I'm now determined to take it that one step further after seeing your pics!

  29. Would love to be able to pull this off but reckon I might just end up looking like I have conjunctivitis! x

    1. I have to be in just the right mood for it, but I do like how surprising red is on the eye. It's not the easiest colour though! Thanks for reading my blog, and I hope you're enjoying it :)
