Chanel Mimosa Nail Polish applied

This was a complete impulse purchase. I bought Chanel Mimosa from the Covent Garden Pharmacy on the day of the Chanel Summer nationwide launch without spending much (any) time considering whether I really want it, simply because it had sold out in Selfridges within a couple of weeks of its exclusive launch there; the allure of the limited edition at work.

It's a bright zesty yellow with the typical subtle Chanel shimmer, and the colour and finish are bright and cheery. The particular shade of yellow chosen is likely to be flattering on a range of skin tones (for yellow) and the hidden shimmer stops it looking flat and paint-like. It was a pain to apply; very draggy, and it required three coats to get a vaguely even finish on my short nails.

I really can't decide if I like it, or if it's a bit hideous. Mr London prefers it to the American Apparel Butter nail lacquer I featured here, and I think he is right.

Only Chanel could make yellow nail polish so desirable. Perhaps this is what went on in product development...
Chanel Nail Guy: Come on people, I need a challenge. I've had them wearing black nails, blue, mint, taupe, aqua....even the khaki brown sold like hot cakes. What colour next?
Development intern: What about...yellow?
Chanel Nail Guy: Yellow nails? That's insane! Let's do it.
Perhaps they put catnip for women in the nail polish.

  1. OMG! Too funny! I'm guilty of having a sip or two of the Chanel kool-aid- but never again with yellow! I can't wait until their Fall collection comes out. Mimosa does look nice on you. xx

  2. Not feelin' the colour or finish of it at all. Not my cup of tea.

  3. Hey MM - the Chanel kool-aid, precisely ;)

Hi Vex - AND it's also a pain in the bum to apply. I'm very Emperor's New Clothes about it - I look at it and think it's horrid, but then my eyes do a 'but it's Chanel, it MUST be nice thing'.

  4. That's hilarious. I think you're right that only Chanel could make yellow nails a sellout!

I can't really decide what I think about it. It looks ok but not wow, then I think I must be missing something that everyone else 'gets'. There's something very late 80's about it. I think against my skin and with my awful nails it would be a disaster so I don't mind giving this one a miss.

  5. LOL I prefer a creme finish for a yellow. I have Essie Shorty Pants, but have never worn it

  6. I really enjoy wearing a yellow nail occasionally and I'm totally lusting after Mimosa.

  7. I guess you can clump me into the group of those that just don't get it, because I had this shade and exchanged it. I think. It was so over hyped IMHO.

  8. oooooooooh. I dont think even Chanel can make yellow polish look great. After Hiro told me that my hands look diseased with yellow nails....I cant look at any yellow polishes in a good light again. Blame Hiro!

  9. I like it..but it is very difficult to get an even finish.. I had to try at least twice to make it look even and not sure any polish is worth the extra time. It's a 3 coater for sure!

  10. I do like yellow nails, but generally on everyone other than me, whenever I paint mine yellow its off again within the hour they somehow look a tad fungal, if thats not too vile?! Actually great name for a yellow polish "Fun Gal" sorry laughing at my own (pathetic) joke!

  12. Alas, not for me. When I heard that yellow was to be the "next big thing" I tried a yellow polish but with my Mexican complexion it made me look jaundiced. Jaundice has never been a fashion do.

  13. I love yellow, yellow perks me up. I would agree with your hubby, and the colour of american apparel is nicer. My problem with this: you would expect from something which costs (is it £22) to be a near perfect polish wouldn't you? Chanel: sort it!

  14. Hey Liloo - it's not quite that bad, but still not a bargain at £17. For £17, it should apply itself!

Hello Queenie - no, jaundice isn't a statement I'd go for either ;)

@Debbie - LOL. Bet you a dollar you could sell that name to Illamasqua ;)

  15. I've just bought it - another complete impulse buy for me as well. The lady at the counter asked me if I was going to wear it on my toes - perhaps that's the way to wear it! x

  16. Sooo disappointing! After I whined about it at the weekend my friend presented me with Mavala's Acid Yellow today, which cost about £3 and goes on much better. The Mimosa looks good with a black shatter topcoat, but that kind of defeats the purpose of spending £17 on it. I wish I hadn't bothered.

  17. I'm wearing it now, but how did you get such a nice finish! Mine looks a bit streaky!

  18. Hello Productdoctor - three coats, and a good top coat to even it all out further!

Hi Cat - oh, I'll have to keep an eye out for the Mavala.

Hello BristolBeautyBlog - perhaps it is!

I do have this and use. Very nice one. Yes it's yellow but Chanel makes it look classy and expensive.
