Stonn. She is yours.

Stonn. She is yours. After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing, after all, as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true.
Spock, Amok Time.*

I find this often used to be true of cosmetic purchases: I enjoyed the browsing, planning and agonising over a new collection more than the having. I seem to get less caught up in new collections now, and enjoy (and use) the things I have more. I find if I make myself wait a little while and not buy something the minute it comes out, by the time a couple of weeks have passed I don't feel the same yearning. This also means I have less guilt over the purchases I do buy.

Do you find this to be true? Do you find that once you've bought something you tend to enjoy it less, or do you resist the impulse adrenalin rush to buy?

*Quote from Star Trek. Incidentally, Spock is another of my lovely childhood nicknames, as I have very pointy ears.

  1. I do find it to be very true. The planning and considering beforehand are part of the excitement for me. I will often force myself to wait that little bit longer before I jump in and buy to see whether it continues to niggle at me or whether it was just a passing fancy.

I have to be like this as my budget is limited. I try desperately to only buy things that I really want. Recent passing whims include the NARS spring eyeshadow duos and a couple of things from MAC. I'm very pleased I hung on with the Turtles palette too. Had I bought it at full price, I'm almost positive I would have been disappointed once the thrill of the chase had worn off!

I'm pretty sure my makeup buying habits would baffle Spock!

  2. Spock Love!!! This quote made my day :-D

I think I'm past the worst of my makeup obsession phase by now. I've amassed a reasonable stock, I know what works and what doesn't, so now I bypass some collections, and others I wait until they get to the discount bin. I still buy based on impulse or desire, but I've mostly gotten my instincts under check (Spock would be moderately proud)

  3. I definitely agree, this is getting more and more true for me as well. These last months I've found that I was disappointed in things I bought and that the lemming and hunting part was way more exciting than actually owning it.
But now when that happens, I do give or sell or swap the items - I know that anyway I always go back to the things I love so much.

  4. There's an ad up there trying to convince me to buy Star Trek Costumes ;)

I agree with you - I often just enjoy watching online reviews, reading blogs, checking swatches, MakeupAlley etc. Of course I have my impulse purchases, things that I regret buying but I've also found quite a lot of products that work for me. But yes sometimes I feel a bit silly with all those colourful eyeshadows I have when often I don't even have the time or the will to spend more than 15 minutes on my makeup in the morning.

    Thank you for this post!

  5. I've found similar things - that if I wait, the desire passes and I want something else instead. If I had bought it, I would feel guilty. But now that I control my purchases more carefully, and only buy things that I really know I want, I no longer have guilt over my purchases, and I actually enjoy having and using them more.

  6. The thrill of the hunt is always more satisfying that the consuming part. I found it's better if I try to spread out my purchases instead of doing lots in one go or doing a total no buy. Example, after not being able to go out for 3 months coz of the stupid morning sickness, I found myself buying cosmetics & nail polish almost every time I went to the shop - which is like one/twice a week. So bad, I know.

  7. I don't know if it counts in the same way but I really, really want a thing, end up buying and then never using it because I don't want to 'spoil' it! Said item then gets forgotten about but I do have days where I pull the box of never-opened things and look through them so I do get pleasure from that but occasionally question why on earth I bought some of the things in the first place. My Estee Lauder solid fragrance is a case in point.. I like having them but my life would be no different at all if i didn't!

  8. I've stopped buying things and then not using them, cothes and makeup. that really used to be my thing until thanks to nigella lawson I realised that life's too short - why save something until you or the thing is too old to enjoy it?
