Tom Pecheux for Estee Lauder at Derek Lam NYFW

I try not to overdo press release posts, but I like the look that Tom Pecheux designed for the Derek Lam New York Fashion Week show very much (and I was interested in seeing a picture of the man himself too). I think it works well on all three girls, and it's interesting how the ratio of silver to black eyeshadow and the shape of the winged eye has been adapted to suit the individual colouring and features.

I like the look on Liu Wen particularly. This shot shows the nail polish used, which is Porcelain, launching in Autumn 2011 (credit: Jin Soon Choi for Estee Lauder). Liu Wen has really beautifully shaped nails; it's nice to see such an elegant shortish shape.
The point make-up used is from Estee Lauder Autumn 2011 collection. I'm not sure I could go quite so nude matte on my lips, but I do like the texture and combination of the metallic silver and shimmer black eyeshadows.

  1. Call me old fashioned, and in the same vein as my Dad talking to me about Teardrop Explodes and The Police in the late 70's early 80's and him saying that it all sounds the same and he can't hear the words, but I just don't get this. It looks weird and sci-fi space agey in a bad way, like a creature from the deep swamp movie, so bad that it really is not good. Winged eyeshadow? Winged liner I can admire, bit kittenish and '60s but winged eyeshadow? I think the beautiful models look a bit less beautiful after this. I am only hoping that as with fashion, the catwalk is the extreme and the highstreet a more diluted version. Jan x

  2. Hi Jan - I think catwalk make-up has to be extreme to show up under the lights. What looks a bit OTT in a close up looks fine from a distance, with the bright lights.

I know the reverse is true for me - what looks fine (and sometimes, to my eye, quite heavy!) make-up barely shows up in photos.

It's the idea that's interesting - I wouldn't (obviously) go as extremely winged, but I do like the combo of the colours and textures, and I think the nail is lovely.

  3. You are definately right with it not showing up in photos, but I am still not sure, the final picture makes the model's eyes look uneven to my mind, thanks for getting back to me with your thoughts though. Jan x
