According to the back of the pack, Poppy King has often been asked what is the prefect (bad copy checker!) shade to wear with jeans. I suppose that's considerably less bizarre than Fiona Phillips being continuously quizzed by the public about skincare.
This a good, universal, my lips but better shade to wear with casual clothes. Jean Queen comes in a sheer lipstick and a gloss, and both are a very slightly warm medium pink without shimmer (the gloss is a little more pigmented than the lipstick). Personally I prefer the sheer lipstick, which is a more pigmented and slightly more glossy, warm pink version of Medieval. The gloss is a little sticky for my liking, but I'm not really a lover of lipgloss.
Swatched: lipstick on left, gloss on right.
On my lips - the lipstick on its own:
The lipstick topped with the gloss:
These are great, easy to wear lip products. Compared to Saint Rose (which I have often swatched, but don't own) the Jean Queen lipstick is more moisturising, less bright and more of a neutral pink to Saint Rose's slightly brighter, cooler pink.
So, perhaps not the most astounding concept ever from Lipstick Queen, but good basic workhorse colour and products. I am pretty excited about the sneak tease of the next things Poppy has up her sleeve - a trio of something called Peacock Alley - there's a link to a picture of the box on the Lipstick Queen Facebook page here http://twitter.com/lpstkqueen/status/25316113612.

really not keen on the packaging but lovely soft colours

I have the lipstick too and I love it! YOu are right, it is so easy to wear.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you posted about this as I am just about to place a Space NK order for some Lipstick Queen and this really caught my eye. Looks like a great easy to wear pink, just right.
ReplyDeleteNormally I'm a silent lurker and I don't really comment, but during the years I've been using and collecting lipstick, I'm sorry to say that Lipstick Queen has been by far one of the biggest disappointments, if not the biggest. When I had read about the brand and the concept for the first time about a year ago, my mind was blown - A brand specializing in shades of red and the needs of prolonged wear of the color. Months later when I was finally able to grab a Lipstick Queen matte dark red lipstick with its matching lip liner, I couldn't believe how cakey and chalky it stood on my lips, and the lipliner was just as bad in that it just did not go over. I found the combined effect of the two products was even worse - If you can believe it, it was just.. muddy and uneven. I don't mean to trash the brand and I'm glad you're happy with the products you got - But the experience was so bad with me that the post just reminded me of the 40 dollars I spent for nothing. Just my two cents here.
ReplyDeleteThey both look gorgeous on you. Too bad the gloss is sticky. How does it compare with her 15 min of Fame glosses (I love those so much)?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post!
Hi Amina - I'm not totally sold on the Jean thing either - I liked Butterfly Ball better as a concept :) They are nice colours though.
ReplyDeleteHi OC - yes, v easy to wear, good for lazy weekends!
Hi Lipstick Luvvie - it's a good balanced pink.
Hello Bendaydots - thanks for de-lurking :) I do agree with you somewhat about the Sinners - I love the colour of the Red Sinner, but it does need lip balm underneath for me and it isn't the easiest texture to wear. Although it is similarly pigmented, I find the Besame classic lipsticks much easier to apply.
Hey JV! The gloss isn't really sticky, just stickier than the lipstick. It's maybe a touch sticker than the 15 minutes, although quite a similar texture. Thanks so much. x
They look lovely on you. Nina was recommending them to me and I can see why! Although might have to skip the gloss as you know how picky I am with stickiness :)
ReplyDeleteThey look great on you Grace!
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how different these two look on me...they swatch on my hand exactly the same, and I love them as they are comfortable to wear, easy and flattering; it's just that on my pigmented lips these turn almost fuchsia. Very strange, as you would have thought they would look even lighter...
Nina
Hey Replica - no gloss for you, for sure. Go for the lipstick.
ReplyDeleteHi Nina! I think with sheer lipsticks the natural colour of your lips shows through, so a pigmented lip will make them 'read' darker, even though they are much lighter than your natural lip, in comparison to say, mine. I think it's why lip colours are pretty much the most 'your mileage may vary' products.
I think both the lipstick and the gloss look lovely (JV is a star). I had pondered before when looking at swatches, whether or not the gloss was similar to the colour of the Bourjois lipgloss that changes colour on contact. What do you think, similar or nothing like?
ReplyDeleteI suspect from what you've said, that this is a better introduction to the line that the regular lipsticks. You can't really go wrong with these sorts of colours I think.
MB x
Hi MB - not much like the Bourjois to me. The LQ gives a more opaque, warm mid pink. The Bourjois gives a translucent cool pink that can go quite bright on some.
ReplyDeleteI'd go with Jean Queen lipstick, Medieval or a Butterfly Ball as an introduction to Lipstick Queen. The Sinners are really opaque and pigmented, and do need some work.
Thanks Grace, that's really helpful. From your description I think I would like the LQ more. Thanks for the suggestions about which lipsticks to try too. I had been looking at the Sinners but I think I'd probably get more useful wear out of the others.
ReplyDeleteOn a different note, Grace, I've recently bought a lipstick from the NARS Daphne Guinness collection in Basque red, I can't tell you how much I love it and it strikes me as something you would like very much. It's a deep, blood-y red that is very suitably named after the red Basque roofs. Even better is the texture with just the right amount of sheerness. If you ever buy it, I'd like to hear your opinions on it. Take care!
ReplyDeleteHi BendayDots - thanks very much for the recommendation. I love NARS eyeshadows and blushes, I will have to have a look at this lipstick next time I'm near a counter. Have a good weekend!
