The grey hairs I have developed at my temples over the last year or so have begun to really annoy me, and I decided to do something about it myself. I didn't want to change the colour of my hair, I just wanted to blend in the grey a bit. I decided to go for Naturtint permanent hair dye, and chose shade 6N Dark Blonde, as I have read that hair dyes can tend to turn hair darker than you'd expect. As this is an ammonia-free formula, I didn't particularly worry about it lifting my hair much. Big mistake.
This is a picture after washing and leaving to air dry. My ends are a mess; I need to have a good few inches cut off, and I'd just tried a sample of a new shampoo and conditioner that I don't think I'll be buying any time soon (to be fair, I could also have brushed it before taking a picture). The colour is a good shade or two lighter than my natural mid-chestnut, and also quite brassy/orange toned.
In more subdued lighting it doesn't look as bad, but it's still brassier than I like it.
Close up of the root area, where the orange-ness is most apparent. Really not loving this colour.
So, the moral of this story is I'm not to be trusted with permanent hair dye, ever. Also, Naturtint does not pull dark, and 6N Dark Blonde is too light to match my natural colour.
I'm going back to my hairdresser on Thursday to apologise for a) being an idiot and b) not having had my hair cut in a year. I'm hoping he can fix it! Last time I went and got it done properly he gave me a lovely chocolate/chestnut shade, so I'm hoping for something similar.
If you have any hair colouring disaster stories to share in the comments, please do feel free to make me feel a bit better about my own ineptitude.

I don't think it looks too bad. I know if you don't like it though it awful waiting for it to be fixed. I'm sure your hair look lovely after your visit on Thursday.
ReplyDeleteYou've seen my most recent hair disaster! It looks a lot better since it's been cut though. I think by far my worst hair colour error was the bottle of sun-in. Dark hair + Sun-in = Brassy orange. Nice!
I don't think this colour is bad at all! Maybe you're just not used to seeing it on you. It's actually really nice in the second pic!
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely not as bad as you think - but if that's not what you want then that is what matters. I used to have lovely long curly dark brown hair, but of course didn't appreciate it and gave in to the silly urge to change it and had it dyed blonde and permanently straightened - which I hated and lasted about 5 days! Result - sort of half curly, half straight, mostly frizzy, really damaged and much shorter hair! We have ALL done something similar...
ReplyDeleteI am as bad as you! This is just the type of thing I would do and then have to run to the hairdresser with my tail between my legs. I need a hair cut too. It's been over a year...ALREADY!
ReplyDeleteI decided I wanted to dye my hair pillarbox red. Friend bleached it for me then applied red. I went hot pink. Too late to do anything about it, went out for the evening. Had a little snog in a club. Went to bar with said snog, where the lighting was better. He took one look at my Barbie hair, and yelped off into the sunset never to be seen again.
ReplyDeleteFeel better?
I think it's a pretty color! But I totally understand the feeling of having a haircolor that is "not you" as this happened to me once. After that, I learned how to read and translate the hairdyes shade numbers, so now I always know what I want and what the odds are of having too much red, warmth, gold or whatever! A 5 might have been better for you but the kind of reflects you pick is very important too.
ReplyDeleteMmh, I should blog about that LOL.
I really don't think it looks that bad at all. Maybe it's not the perfect colour that you wanted but at least it doesn't actually look like a bad dye job. I can't do much with my hair because it's so dark and I don't want to bleach it, but if I tried I'm pretty sure it would be a disaster.
ReplyDeleteThe last time I *tried* to color my own hair at home, it was a disaster! I began with reddish- brown and was going for deepest cool brown and ended up with deep burgundy/magenta (remember Rainbow Brite?). It was horrid! My hair was not quite as long as yours is now and it had to be chopped, have two Malibu treatments (to try to remove the color) and then re-colored. I have since kept away from the home hair color. I don't think yours looks bad at all- it's always worse when we are looking at it ourselves though- :O).
ReplyDeleteI hate those grays too and they are just getting worse! I have to go every three weeks to get re-touched or they are just dreadful!
You are stunning and will be more stunning (if that is possible) after you get back from the hairdresser on Thurs!

Having seen it in the flesh I can state, quite categorically, that there is NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR HAIR YOU NUTNUT!
ReplyDeleteHowever, that won't stop you feeling that it's wrong, just like it didn't when that biotch in Covent Garden dyed mine too dark back in March. There was nothing wrong with it, it just made me uncomfortable.
You have lovely hair, step away from the box dye ...
to be honest, the colour is nice, just a bit flat. have you considered adding high/lowlights?
ReplyDeletei actually like the "orange-ness," it makes it look a bit on the red side and i'm ALL about red hair! :p

I think a woman's relationship with her hair is a journey, don't think I am there yet at all. I hate going to the hairdressers so consequently have long long greying hair - I also can totally relate to just hating what you've done and have had many a hot frustrated tear shed from colour or cut disasters that other people have said ooohhhh lovely!
