My current skincare routine

I've had a couple of comments asking what I'm using at the moment for skincare, so here it is. My skin is normal to dry, I'm in my mid to late 30s and it reacts badly to ingredients that don't agree with it; I can get clogged pores or itchy bumpy skin quite easily. My skin doesn't get on well with mineral oil, but it also seems to dislike some heavy plant oils too.

Morning routine:
  • In the winter, I just splash with water. With it being so hot and sticky at the moment, I use Nubo Softening Cleansing Mousse in the morning to cleanse.
  • Vitamin C serum - I'm using Nubo Vitamin C 12% Concentrate. This is an excellent vitamin C product - my skin is clear and bright using it. It is very expensive though, at £60 for 12ml. I've also used and loved Skinceuticals CE Ferulic Serum in the past. I swear by a vitamin C serum for daytime use as a good one boosts the protection from your spf and also helps to prevent and repair the dullness and uneven pigmentation that sun exposure can cause.
  • Chantecaille spf 30 face firming cream. Again this is expensive, but it doesn't feel like a sunscreen on my skin and doesn't turn me into an oilslick in the summer. I love it, but it didn't work quite so well for Replica at Visionary Beauty blog when she tried it underneath a foundation. You can read her review on it here: http://visionarybeauty.blogspot.com/2010/06/chantecaille-firming-sun-cream-spf-30.html
  • Omorovicza Reviving Eye cream. I received a couple of samples of this from Liberty when I bought the Ellis Faas Eye Light, and I've been ekeing them out since then. It contains Arnica and Vitamin C, and I think it has made a difference to my dark circles - I'll be purchasing it when I finish my Sarah Chapman Eye Recovery.
Evening routine:
  • Cleanse with Emma Hardie balm cleanser, then double cleanse with Nubo Softening Cleansing Mousse. I know the Emma Hardie states that it doesn't need an additional cleanser, but I prefer to follow with the Nubo to leave my skin feeling really clean in the hot weather.
  • Nubo Controlled Dynamic Retinol Boost I serum (2/3 times a week). Before the weather became really hot and humid I followed with Nubo Cell Dynamic Overnight Recharge Totale, a very rich night cream, but now that my skin has gotten more accustomed to the retinol and the weather is more humid I can use the serum on its own.
  • Other nights - Nubo Cell Dynamic Overnight Recharge Totale. I've been using a couple of samples of Omorovicza Rejuvenating Night Cream for the last week instead, and so far I like it a lot; it's much lighter than the Nubo (which is excellent for colder weather).
  • Omorovicza Reviving Eye cream.
  • La Roche Posay Effaclar AI as a spot treatment when necessary.
Basically, I think that the things that make the biggest difference are a good vitamin C serum for daytime, a gentle retinol at night, and an spf 30 for sun protection. The ones I use are expensive (my skin is really picky, and I'd rather invest in skincare that doesn't rile it up) but there are good, less expensive options in lines like La Roche Posay and Avene.

Disclosure: Nubo Softening Cleansing Mousse and Cell Dynamic Overnight Recharge Totale products provided without charge for consideration for review, Omorovicza Eye Cream and Rejuvenating Night Cream were both commercial samples, and all other products were purchased.

  1. I think this is a great routine you have there, and all the essentials are covered. I am soon turning 33 myself and I think I need to find a Vitamin C serum and add that to my routine now. I've been using retinoids, though (and am so glad I'm not allergic to them as many people are) and sometimes AHA/BHA to clear up oilier areas, I can't complain about my skin at all.
Oh and that Chantecaille SPF sounds divine! Might need to try that as well!

  2. I really really want the Chantecaille SPF cream, but it is not available in the U.S. Do you know of any other way to get it? Do you think a UK store would ship to the US without it costing an arm?

  3. what is the deal with vitamin c and retinol? are they great 30-something ingredients? i seem to be getting new lines overnight so i'm thinking i might need to up the ante with my skincare regime!

  4. Amina, retinol/retinoids are the only things that have been proved to effectively work against aging signs. Vitamin C helps brightening the skin, which is always a bonus :)

  5. Interesting, I think you have a more involved regime than me, still you have piqued my interest in Nubo, I think I'll order some before than Beauty expert GWP ends.

  6. Hi Musing on Beauty - thank you for your really helpful comments.

Hi Amina - I use retinoids for anti-ageing and skin-clearing effects (I find they help to keep my skin unclogged) and the vitamin C is for skin brightening, just as Musing on Beauty said. Great ingredients for 30-somethings! If your skin doesn't tolerate retinoids, an AHA is another alternative for night-time use.

Hi Anonymous - I'd try the Fenwick counter. Next time I'm by it I'll ask if they ship internationally and what the cost would be. Unfortunately, the US hasn't allowed the sunscreens used in it (not sure why, none look particularly new to me?)

Hi Replica - I really like it as a line, and the hydrating lipids complex in the GWP is good for dehydrated skin too. Still think a lot of it is too expensive though!

  7. Thanks Grace and Musing on Beauty - I've just bought a Murad cleanser with AHA but I shall certainly be looking at adding retinoids too as my skin gets very clogged. Last visit home: Me: "Mum, can you see the new line on my forehead?" (hoped for response: no darling you still have the skin of a 12 year old etc). Mum: "Yes I can see them!" Definitely time for action!! x

  8. i love your blog!! have you ever tried skincare products from epicuren? they are affordable and last a long time. my faves: the CxC vitamin complex, the propolis lotion (great night time moisturizer for oily skin) and the zinc spf20 - which doesn't break me out, my clients love it, and in addition to being very clean - no chemicals, parabens or fragrance - it is moisturizing enough to be used on it's own.
and, no i'm not a rep for epicuren. i'm an esthetician and a long time user :)
i'd love to hear your thoughts if you try it.

  9. Hello you are super pretty. Thank you! I like Propolis as an ingredient very much, I use Egyptian Magic for all kinds of bumps and scrapes on the whole family. I don't think we have Epicuren in the UK, but the products look very interesting (I've just been having a look at the website.) Thank you for your comment, and for visiting my blog. x

  10. have you ever heard of Tata Harper Skincare? if not, then perhaps they'd be of interest :-) it's an all natural and organic (where possible) line. though it's not cheap then i find that their products lasts a really long time considering the bottle sizes. i've been using the products for about tow months now, and i absolutely love them. i have very sensitive and easily reactive skin but am also prone to breakouts, but with this line my skin is clearer than it's ever been and glowing. and a huge plus for me... no more redness! they products smells gorgeous and feels really good and soothing, and moisturizing without being heavy. this line really lives up to being a high end and luxurious brand, and no synthetics, chemicals or other nasty things (which i'm very concerned about).

  11. Hello All my skin is sun damages and pock marked with open pores (sounds yucky but I get told I have nice skin) I know how imperative Retinols are. Do any of you know or use prescription based products and what effective retinol products there are out there specifically. I have juts ordered a 14% glycolic acid serum to use at night.

  12. Hello EmilyBronte. I've never used prescription retin A (I think GPs over here tend to give then for active acne rather than for skin improvement afterwards. Avene retinoid products have a very good reputation, and might be worth trying. Hope this helps. x
