Today, I did not buy anything from MAC

I know, it's hardly 'hold the front page' news, but I'm still quite proud of myself. I don't get pulled into the MAC vortex that often, but every so often there is a collection that calls to me, and Warm and Cozy was one of them. I was very tempted by the Mineralize Skinfinish in By Candlelight, and by some of the lipsticks and eyeshadows. I find that MAC lipsticks and eyeshadows dry out my lips and skin, and the Mineralize Skinfinishes I've owned in the past I've given away or sold on Ebay because they make my skin itchy and clog my pores.  Even so, there's something about the anticipation and hype of a new, limited edition, collection that makes me think that if I don't buy it I'll regret it. The marketing of this brand is genius.

I'd have spent about £66, on stuff that I'd most likely wear once or twice, but I didn't. I know that MAC works brilliantly for a lot of people, but I'd rather save that money for the NARS and Suqqu spring collections. Are you proud of me?

(In the interest of full disclosure, I should probably tell you that as I was going into the MAC store, Mr London said to me "Didn't you tell me not to let you buy MAC stuff again after the last time?")

  1. wow! Well done with your self restraint! I do know what you mean - I too get sucked right in, wear stuff once or twice then it sits folornly in my make up bag calling "use me, I'm lovely" which usually falls on deaf ears.

  2. I am proud of you!!! LOL

I went to the Selfridges sale and came out with a skin cream.....just one skin cream that I needed. I didn't go bonkers and get everything that my heart desired.

    GO US!!!!

  3. I am VERY proud of you! I was tempted briefly about the Warm & Cozy collection as well but was able to walk away with nothing. I too have a number of MSFs that go unused so I don't know why I keep getting tempted by more.

  4. That's awesome! I wish I could say the same, haha. Didn't indulge in anything from Warm & Cozy (I have enough neutrals for now, methinks) but I did pick up the kohl power liners from Love Lace... I always use pencils every day so I knew that I'd get at least some use out of this purchase.

Hooray for not giving into the hype of LE collections!

  7. Well done! I've looked at it and walked away, but I think I might have to have another look tomorrow, just to make sure ...

  8. That's great! MAC's hold on me is also slipping, as I have skipped many of the recent collections. I did however get the Blissed Out nail polish as a nice nude for work.

  9. Wow. I need a "Mr. London" to help keep me out of the MAC stores! :-D

  10. First and foremost, I really like your blog. I've been visiting your site daily since I found it a few weeks ago. We share a love for Edward Bess. I purchased Candlelight and tested it for a week. This is my first MAC purchase in many, many years. Candlelight looked *beautiful* on my complexion, but made my skin itchy and did a mess with my skin. I returned it and searching for a more skin-friendly replacement. I'm tempted to test Rouge Bunny Rouge illum lotion or powder based off your pics and feedback. I live in California, so I'm nervous about buying RBR without testing it. - Cathy

  11. You did, indeed, do very well!. I couldn't resist the shadesticks and the 2N l/g as I missed it the first time round. And since much preferring the MAC Refined & Perfect topping MSFs, any other 'normal' MSFs with the sparkly/glitter finishing doesn't tempt me. I'm not such a fan of NARS strangely....
Funny, I posted recently as well about the power of marketing...you have good willpower!

  12. That collection didn't really do anything for me. I too, was able to walk away. Not as much fun, but much easier on the wallet. Can't wait to see what you buy next!

  13. Hi Victoria - that's exactly what I do too. I am determined not to do this for 2010, and only buy stuff I know I'll use and love.

Hey Old Cow - go us! Big pat on the back for you too. Selfridges at this time of year is an utter temptation.

Hello Michelle - those MSFs are just so tempting. The whole 'it's selling out, QUICK!' is so blinding to my common sense sometimes.

Hi Justine - well, it sounds like you were v sensible to me. I know those pencils get fantastic reviews.

  14. Hello Gabriela - thank you :) They look so pretty, but I just don't use them.

Hi Imo - staying away from temptation is a very good way to avoid those impulses :)

Hey Get Lippie - well, just to make sure.... ;)

Hello Athena - that was restrained :) I only have Baby Goth Girl nail polish from MAC, and I was pleasantly surprised by how well it applies.

Hi AfricanOrchid - every home should have one! I think I'll keep mine though ;)

Hi Cathy. Thank you so much for the kind words. Have you tried the Becca shimmering skin perfectors? They are also very good. I'm very tempted by the Edward Bess highlighters too (isn't it a fantastic brand?)

Hi Moodeve - MAC's marketing is brilliant, I can admire it as much as it frustrates me. Reasonably priced, but lots of LE and hyped collections.

Hi Stells - well, NARS, Chanel and Suqqu are calling to me...:D
