Would you spend £30 on an at-home hair colour? Kelly VanGogh

I had a bit of a sticker shock when I was looking at the Kelly VanGogh line of hair colorants in SpaceNK recently. A "Root Rehab" kit, designed for emergency retouches, costs £32. This is mostly marketed at people who want something to touch up between visits to a hairdresser, and at £32 it's just under half of what I'd spend getting my colour done by my (admittedly not inexpensive, but worth every penny) hair colourist.

I think I am exactly the target audience for this product; sometimes I don't need the whole wash-cut-blow-dry shebang, sometimes I'm just too busy to book in for an appointment. I had an unhappy experience last time I DIYed with L'Oreal Casting, so I'm tempted to pick one of these kits up and give it a go to refresh my colour.

The question now is - Cool Light Brown, or Neutral Light Brown? Do you think £32 is excessive for a home colorant, or is it worth it between salon visits if it doesn't turn out brassy/orange?

  1. Too much.. its not normal for a home colorant to e that pricey especially when the colorants they use in salons cost less than that. Thats just a gimmick in my op!

  2. Hey Tali - I know you're right, but there's a (quite possibly silly!) bit of me that thinks it might be the one to give me that salon perfect colour without the faff of going to a salon!

  3. I'm with Tali on this...way too expensive for this type of product. At this price I would want to know exactly what it is that makes this so different from similar products. IMHO, only a salon visit can give you the salon perfect results. Not what you wanted to hear, I know...lol

  4. Its so funny that you post on this, as I just gave the kit a try on Sunday! I have never tried home hair color before, but I definitely had success with this one. My hair came out of the deal soft, shiny, and thankfully, one color!

  5. Hi Nina - I'm soooo tempted though! Maybe I will email and ask for the magic ingredient details. Maybe I will buy some RedkenEQ from ebay instead, or just go to my hairdresser.

Hi Krasey Beauty - finally an enabler! ;)

  6. Sorry, Grace. WAY too expensive - even professional dyes don't cost this much.

I do know what you mean about wanting to use it, but seriously, too expensive a way to do it.

  7. Don't be another voice of reason Get Lippie! Well, if I try it and it's meh, you can all say 'told you so.'

  8. As someone who formerly worked in the haircut/hair color field, I would rather buy the many pro tubes of color and developer. But, like Frederic Fekkai if there is success for designer color, then that is another area that will be filled with more names.

  9. Hi Olivia , I know, I should go for some pro colour instead, shouldn't I?

  10. I have to agree with what tali said at the top there. This is pure gimmick, a tube of the colour they use in a professional salon costs at most £10.

I buy pro dye sometimes from here. www.capitalhairandbeauty.co.uk

  11. Many apologies for being a voice of reason, you know it's not something I specialise in!
