Dolce & Gabbana Elegance eyeshadow quad

When I first got it I didn't feel the massive love for my Dolce & Gabbana stuff that I expected to, and I'm not sure why. On paper, we're made for each other; Pat McGrath is the make up artist in charge, and I love the glamour of Dolce & Gabbana; the idea of sauntering around in smoky eyes a la Sophia Loren calls to me. In cosmetics, as in clothes, D&G sits somewhere between Armani and Versace. It isn't as beige as Armani, but not quite as in your face as Versace.

I got the Elegance quad as a gift in the summer (Mr London had done something stupid) and liked it, but didn't adore it. I think that the cooler colourway is more suited to autumn/winter months, and I'm pleased to say I'm liking this a lot more now; I've even put more D&G pieces on my Christmas list. I'm going to give the Devil lipstick I wasn't sure about another go too; I'm hoping the lipstick bleeding may have been due to the hot and sticky weather I first got it in.

Elegance has an ivory shimmer, a cool taupe shimmer, a matte grey and a grass green shimmer. I wear this with the ivory all over the lid, the grey in the outer corner of my mobile lid and to line my lower lid, the green buffed onto the middle of the lid and the taupe in the crease.  The textures are lovely; pigmented, soft and easy to blend. The overall look is very flattering on my sludge brown eyes; mostly neutral with a bit of colour to lift, without shouting 'look at this GREEN eyeshadow.'

I'm also interested in the Nude quad (plum, chocolate and flesh tones), the Champagne quad (very cool neutrals, quite similar to Kevyn Aucoin eye palette #2) and the Stromboli quad (warm smoky eyes.)

Swatches:

So, this was a grower on me. I had to pull it out and give it another go, but now I'm feeling it a lot more. Does this ever happen to anyone else?

  1. I bought mine in the summer (Contrasts) and it wasn't right for that season. It's much better for winter so it's finally getting another go!

  2. Hey Marcia. It's funny how some items are so seasonal; Contrasts is another one that I think looks nice. I think these are almost too 'done' for Summer, at least for me, they feel better in the autumn/winter.

  3. Hi there!

Thanks for this post! I have been eying D&G for a while but hadn't ever purchased. There's not a lot about D&G, so I like any post about it!

I have my eye on champagne but am not thrilled that 2 of the shades are mattes. So I settled on Golds 125 instead which should be on its way to me from Saks. All of those shades look shimmery so it looks promising.

  4. Hi Autumn Masquerade, how nice to see you! D&G is quite difficult to get hold of and it's expensive to buy remotely and take a chance on too. There's a good review of the Gold quad on The Beauty Look Book; it looks very pretty. x

  5. This brand should be really, really hot but it just doesn't do it for me - feel it could have been much better presented with a real twist and amazing packaging, but it just, well, isn't!

  6. Hi BBB - there seems to be a real lack of buzz around it for some reason. They've spent large on advertising too (I do wish Scarlett would close her mouth in pictures.)
