Winterproofing - the lips

I am 'blessed' with intrinsically dry skin, particularly around my eyes, feet, hands and lips. As the weather gets colder, my skin gets drier and I am constantly on the hunt for products to counteract the dryness. I thought it might be useful to write a series on products I've tried for these areas and liked/not liked, and I'm starting with the lips.

The expensive (all of these lip balms are around the £30 mark.)

Sisley Nutritive lip balm. This has no scent, and sinks into the lips. I find that this really does improve the condition of my lips on a long term basis, meaning that I need to use it less often over time. Bought from Selfridges.

Creme De La Mer lip balm. I did not like this one at all; it leaves a waxy coating on my lips and never seemed to treat the dryness. I also don't like mint lip balms; I find mint quite drying in itself, and I'd rather use the Aveda mint drops to freshen my breath. Bought from Selfridges.

Suqqu Lip Essence Cream. I find this does treat dryness well, but it has a very greasy feel; it's no good underneath a red lipstick, which it'll make smear all over the place. Best used at night time. No scent, but does smell a bit vaseline-y. Bought from Selfridges.

The not-so expensive

Malin & Goetz. This is an oil-gel formula that looks like Bonjela or (sorry to write it) some sort of lubricant (mother, if you're reading this, I go for regular smear tests. That's how I know what a lubricant looks like.) It's scentless, and sinks into the lips without leaving a sticky film. It's the best of the lip balms listed here for wearing under a strong lip colour. Bought from Liberty, cost £9.

Pai lip balm. This is an almond oil, beeswax and cocoa butter solid balm. It's scented with bergamot, which is very pleasant. I think it would work well for moderately dry lips, and it's great if you want to avoid mineral oil, but my lips are just too dry for it in winter. £6, from Content Beauty.

Kiehls lip balm #1 with Vanilla. I like the texture of this and the Vanilla scent, but not the sunscreen-y aftertaste. I've donated this to Mr London though, who is liking it a lot (he's a big Kiehls fan, because the packaging isn't girly and the products are no-nonsense.) £8.30, from Beauty Expert.

Please note: the Pai and the Kiehls were sent to me for free, for consideration for review. All other products were bought by me. I receive no remuneration if you click on the links in this post, or any other.

  1. I like Kiehls too.. but after trying Dr. Lipp's Nipple Cream there's no turning back. I'm glad to hear u didn't like La Mer, as I've been hesitating whether to fork out a fortune for a lip balm!

  2. I have problems with very dry lips too.
Right now I really love the Dermalogica AgeSmart Lip Renewal balm-I received a sample and I'll buy the full size, although it's 20pounds :( I really recommend it: the scent is almost non existent, it makes the lips look better in an instant.
Also, I find that the best lipgloss when I have dry lips is the Lipfusion.

Looking forward to your furhter recomendations for dry skin.

  3. I love the Sisley one.
For me is just the best ever. I can easely find good lip balms, read Jonh Masters Organics or That Works, but the Sisley one is for sure the best ever ever ever.
That is how fan I am, lol
I need to try that Malin & Goetz

  4. I do think Sisley products are very good despite the horrendous price tags. I'm quite interested in the By Terry Baume de Rose - it gets great reviews on MUA.

  5. I love the Sisley one too, I got from a Beauty Bible testing parcel a couple of years ago. Exactly the sort of sample I dread getting in those, works perfectly, wonderfully well, yet totally unaffordable! I do do balk at £30 for a lip balm, but it's one of the best I've ever tried.

  6. Hi Akisa - I definitely wouldn't recommend the CDLM. I'll have to have a look for Dr Lipps - I've heard it's good before.

Hello Klara - thanks for your recommendation. Sometimes I think it is worth paying a bit extra for something that really works.

Hi Gabriela - the Sisley is such a good balm. It's worth giving the M&G a try; I've been impressed with it.

Hi Amina - I agree; Sisley is expensive, but it does have some brilliant products. I've tried the By Terry at SpaceNK and didn't like it much; I didn't like the pale pink layer it left on my lips and the rose scent is quite strong.

Hello Get Lippie - it's so good. If you don't suffer from really dry lips I agree it probably isn't worth it, but if nothing else works, I'll buy the Sisley. My lips literally crack and bleed in the winter; I'm hoping the M&G keeps that at bay, but if it doesn't I'll be shelling out the clams for the Sisley again.

  10. Hi Anon - I've tried Liz Earle, and I like quite a lot of it (especially the cleanse and polish) but I didn't find the superbalm worked on my very very dry lips. Thanks for your comment. x
