Jo Malone Vanilla & Anise purchase and initial thoughts

I bought this yesterday lunchtime at the Jo Malone counter in Selfridges (where the service was very good. The assistant actually advised that I wear it for 15 minutes before purchasing, instead of just making the immediate sale.)

On first spray I get a clear crystalline liquorice and vetiver hit, that warms and softens into a smokier floral before finally settling (after about 3-4 hours) into a my-skin-but-better vanilla musk. This fragrance isn't at all gourmand to my nose, which pleases me a lot because I often don't do well with the more dessert-smelling sniffs.

I could see this being popular with men as well as women. It's comforting but not feminine or cloying, and would be a good choice for a professional everyday fragrance - although it lasts well it doesn't have a big sillage like the limited edition Dark Amber & Ginger Lily, and it's less exuberant than Pomegranate Noir.

I'm wearing it with my JM Orange Blossom body lotion, and that's a very nice combination. I still think it would also do well with Grapefruit and Blue Agave & Cacao, although I do now think Pomegranate Noir would overpower it. I'd also like to try it with Nutmeg and Ginger (another linger-rather-than-shout JM sniff) and I suspect it would also work beautifully with that other JM stalwart, Lime, Basil & Mandarin (the vetiver notes in both fragrances would help them to marry nicely.)

I bought the 30ml size for £32. Although the 100ml bottle is better value for money, I like to have a couple on the go at once to choose from, and so the smaller size suits me better.

  2. That sounds really nice, wish I had a Jo Malone store near me, I've bought online before and took a chance on Blue agava (which I liked) and Vintage Gardenia (which I really disliked) its so hard to choose perfumes without smelling them first ! That said I am tempted by your description of the new one and pomegrante noir intriques me :)

  3. Hi Replica

I think a Jo Malone counter or store would do really well in your neck of the woods, so it's a shame there isn't one there. I didn't get on that well with Vintage Gardenia either, which I found very heavy on tuberose and sandalwood, two notes I don't care that much for. I love Pomegranate Noir - although it's spicy and "big" it's also quite fresh.

By the way - I got Tantalising Lovebird from RBR and it was the one I was looking at in the Zuneta picture - it's lovely. Thanks for the help figuring it out :)

Hi Elise - thank you for your comment.

  4. Hi Grace,

I think a store would do well here too, there's not too many good cosmetic shops where I am really, all a bit samey.
Glad it was the right shade, I'm awaiting a RBR order, one of the things I ordered was their concealer pen, will be interesting to see what thats like x

  5. Hi Grace! Just found your blog and will be following from now on! I've also been interested in trying JM stuff, but never really got round to it. They actually do sell it in my country (Italy), though not in my hometown...I just think it's one of those things one should buy oneself as a present when in London!! Yeah, I'm a bit weird! Anyway, I'm really intrigued by Vanilla & Anise, sounds really good, so I'll definitely keep it in mind when I finally buy my first JM perfume. Thanks for the review!

  6. Hi Anna - I think a Jo Malone perfume would be a lovely keepsake from a visit to London. I loved my first stop inside a Jo Malone shop - I hope you do too. :)

  7. It's a good thing we don't work together because if we did, we'd be shopping at lunch all the time! I still need to check out Jo Malone one of these days.

  8. Hi Michelle - can you imagine the trouble we could get in to? This latest JM is really lovely :)

  9. Thanks for the review, Grace. I bought Amber & Lavender earlier in the summer and am wondering what to layer with it to make it a bit more subtle and less "in your face". I'm not sure that V&A will be it though. I'm really having trouble trying to imagine the anise aspect, so I shall have to wait until I come over to London in December to try it! Can't wait.

    Have a good weekend

  10. Hi Jo

I'd mix A&L with a fresh floral to soften the amber/spice/wood. I like it with Red Roses, but that's quite a heady mix; French Lime Blossom would be a fresher alternative. I think Verbenas of Provence would be good too. Do give me a shout when you're over in London if you'd like to.
